planejazz

The sky swings.

Every plane in the air, played live as jazz.

Every dot is a real aircraft, about nine thousand in the air at any moment. planejazz hears them the way air-traffic control sees them: a radar beam sweeps around you every few seconds, and each plane plays as the beam passes over it.

Planes barely move between sweeps, so the band repeats a figure and lets it drift. The lowest planes walk the bass. Climbing planes comp on electric piano and descending ones on guitar. The highest trade solos on tenor sax and trombone, heavy jets ring the vibes, helicopters sparkle on celesta, and the ground traffic keeps time.

From orbit the band tours the world's busiest airports eastward, a new one every sweep. Click any city or airport to hear the sky above it. A busy hub swings and a quiet night plays a ballad.
